According to ISO 12480-1: Cranes Safe Use, the Appointed Person is a key figure responsible for overseeing crane operations on behalf of the management. In the international oil and gas industry, this role is often referred to as the Person In Charge. Training and education – Standards and certification
The term “certification” is often used quite broadly, but it generally signifies that an organization believes an individual can perform a specific task according to its standards. However, similar to crane certification, this process can lose its value if the standards being certified are not rigorous enough or are flawed in any way.
Globally, there are varied governmental requirements for operating lifting and hoisting equipment, such as cranes, and many countries mandate that operators be licensed. This licensing ensures that the government verifies an individual has met the necessary standards for competent lifting and hoisting operations.
It’s important to remember that certification is only as good as the process that created it and the expertise of the organization offering it. Certification does not always equate to skill or competence.
