Tower Crane Guideline – Bouwend Nederland

The Tower Crane Guideline was developed to improve the safe setup, operation, and dismantling of tower cranes across the construction sector. Cranes for You is strongly convinced that strict compliance with legislation and industry standards is the first and most important step toward Goal Zero. This document is therefore included in our Knowledge Centre as essential reference material for any organisation working with tower cranes.

Summary of the Guideline

The guideline covers all stages of a tower crane’s lifecycle on site — from commissioning and first use to setup, operation, inspections, and dismantling. Key topics include:

  • safety, health, and environmental requirements
  • responsibilities and roles within the project chain
  • mandatory inspections, documentation, and compliance evidence
  • site layout, stability, foundations, ballast, and configuration
  • operational limitations, communication, and maintenance requirements

All recommendations are structured according to legal duties and recognised industry best practice.

Practical Relevance for Lifting & Hoisting Work

Tower cranes are critical assets in construction, but their complexity makes them vulnerable to instability, incorrect setup, and operational misuse. This guideline consolidates the technical, organisational, and legal requirements that determine safe performance. Applying it helps prevent structural failures, improves planning accuracy, supports regulatory compliance, and strengthens the overall safety culture on construction sites.
